The Ross Barnett Reservoir is an impoundment of the Pearl River located in Mississippi. The lake serves as the state's largest drinking water resource, and is managed by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District. The western shore of the lake is bounded by the historic Natchez Trace Parkway. The lake was named for Ross R. Barnett, the 52nd Governor of Mississippi. Construction of the lake, under the direction of the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District, began in 1960 and was completed in 1963. The main purpose of the project was to create a permanent water source for city of Jackson. The reservoir is currently managed by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District. Each year over two million people visit the Ross Barnett Reservoir and enjoy outdoor recreation. Popular activities include boating, fishing, water-skiing, and camping. There are 16 parks, five campgrounds, 22 boat launches, and six trails located along the lake.
