Trump boat parade and voter registration drive held in metro Saturday
The coronavirus made a huge impact on sports, school, and now the election.
The virus has influenced how Mississippians are getting for the election season.
The upcoming election is just 51 days away.
On Saturday, hundreds of people participated in the Trump Boat Parade at the Ross Barnett Reservoir.
Many attendees were excited to show their support for the president.
"We've seen all of them over the internet. We wanted to do something just as spectacular. Everybody is excited and wants to be apart of the event," JJ Branch said.
The boat parades have taken place in cities all across the country as a way to support the Trump campaign while following social distancing guidelines.
"We need to do anything that can unify us or get a lot of people together," Branch said. "When the Trump parade came, it was like 'hey that seems like a great time to unify America right there.'"
Organizers were expecting nearly 500 boats with Trump supporters ready to unite before casting their ballot in the Nov. 3 election.
On the other side of the Jackson metro Saturday, the Sigma Sigma Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity hosted a voter registration drive.
"It's very important to vote," Alpha Phi Alpha chapter President Jay Thompson said. "No vote, no voice. That's what we always say. One of our national programs is 'a voteless people is hopeless people', and we understand that many fought for a dream that they never got a chance to see."
The organization also gave away face masks to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community. The organization's event distributed over 200 face masks and registered 20 voters.
Thompson said so many people's ancestors fought for their right to vote, so it's everyone's job to continue fighting.
The deadline to register to vote in Mississippi for both in person and by mail is Oct. 5.
