VOTERS IN MISSISSIPPI ARE GETTING READY IN DIFFERENT WAYS. THIS AFTERNOON AT THE ROSS BARNNETT RESEVOUR HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THE TRUMP BOAT PARADE. "IT'S A TRUMP PARADE YOU KNOW WE'VE SEEN ALL OF EM OVER THE INTERNET AND EVERYTHING AND WE WANT TO DO SOMETHING JUST AS SPECTACULAR EVERYBODY'S SUPER EXCITED AND EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE APART OF IT." THESE TRUMP BOAT PARADES HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN CITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS A WAY TO SUPPORT TRUMPS CAMPAIGN WHILE FOLLOWING SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES AND EVEN ON BOATS PARTICIPANTS MUST STAY 6 FEET AWAY FROM OTHER BOATS WHILE FOLLOWING GOVORNER TATE REEVE'S CAPACITY RULES. "WE NEED TO DO ANYTHING THAT CAN UNIFY US OR GET A LOT OF PEOPLE TOGETHER AND SO WHEN THE TRUMP PARADE GAME IT'S LIKE HEY THAT SEEMS LIKE A GREAT TIME TO UNIFY AMERICA RIGHT THERE." ORGANIZERS WERE EXPECTING NEARLY 500 BOATS WITH TRUMP SUPPORTERS READY TO UNITE BEFORE CASTING THEIR BALLOT IN NOVEMBER. "'M JUST GLAD MISSISSIPPI'S DOING THEIR PART." NAT POP - ALPHA CHANT AND ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE JACKSON METRO AREA, THE SIGMA SIGMA LAMBDA CHAPTER OF THE ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY IS HOSTING A VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE. "IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO VOTE, NO VOTE NO VOICE THAT'S WHAT WE ALWAYS SAY ONE OF OUR NATIONAL PROGRAMS IS A VOTELESS PEOPLE IS HOPELESS PEOPLE AND WE UNDERSTAND THAT MANY FOUGHT FOR A DREAM THAT THEY NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO SEE." THE ORGANIZATION IS ALSO GIVING AWAY FACE MASKS TO HELP SLOW THE SPREAD OF COVID-19 IN THEIR COMMUNITY. THEIR CHAPTER PRESIDENT JAY THOMPSON SAYS TODAY THEY PASSED OUT OVER 2000 FACE MASKS AND REGISTERED 20 VOTERS. HE SAYS THEIR ANCESTORS FOUGHT FOR THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE SO IT'S THEIR JOB TO CONTINUE FIGHTING. "SO WE'RE HERE STANDING ON THEIR SHOULDERS DOING THAT WORK AND ENSURING THAT EVERYONE HAS THEIR PLACE AT THE TABLE." THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN MISSISSPPI FOR BOTH IN PERSON AND BY MAIL IS OCTOBER 5TH. THIS ELECTION WILL BE UNLIKE ANY WE'VE EVER SEEN DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS AND A SUMMER OF PROTESTS. THERE'S NO WAY TO PREDICT THE OUTCOME BUT ONE THING IS CLEAR...MISSISSIPPIANS ARE READY TO CAST THEIR VOTE. AND BOTH OF THESE EVENTS ARE WAYS PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGING VOTER TURNOUT THIS FALL. The coronavirus made a huge impact on sports, school, and now the election.The virus has influenced how Mississippians are getting for the election season. The upcoming election is just 51 days away. On Saturday, hundreds of people participated in the Trump Boat Parade at the Ross Barnett Reservoir.Many attendees were excited to show their support for the president."We've seen all of them over the internet. We wanted to do something just as spectacular. Everybody is excited and wants to be apart of the event," JJ Branch said.The boat parades have taken place in cities all across the country as a way to support the Trump campaign while following social distancing guidelines."We need to do anything that can unify us or get a lot of people together," Branch said. "When the Trump parade came, it was like 'hey that seems like a great time to unify America right there.'"Organizers were expecting nearly 500 boats with Trump supporters ready to unite before casting their ballot in the Nov. 3 election. On the other side of the Jackson metro Saturday, the Sigma Sigma Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity hosted a voter registration drive. "It's very important to vote," Alpha Phi Alpha chapter President Jay Thompson said. "No vote, no voice. That's what we always say. One of our national programs is 'a voteless people is hopeless people', and we understand that many fought for a dream that they never got a chance to see."The organization also gave away face masks to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community. The organization's event distributed over 200 face masks and registered 20 voters. Thompson said so many people's ancestors fought for their right to vote, so it's everyone's job to continue fighting.The deadline to register to vote in Mississippi for both in person and by mail is Oct. 5.
